How to Improve your Mental Well-Being

Mental distress isn't uncommon to a man. This can be due to stress or problems in your work, life, family, friends, and a lot more. However, the most common cause of this problem is having negative thoughts about yourself. This only means that you do give much value or importance to yourself. As a result, you suffer from mental distress.

These thoughts usually result from your negative past experiences. This can also lead to other mental problems such as depression, multiple personality, and a lot more. When you let these things get the best of you, you may consider harming yourself, your friends, as well as your family.

It is never too late to see life in a new perspective. Before you achieve this, you should first put in your brain that you are important and that your life is valuable. To achieve good mental health, you must also take care of your physical body. In order to do this, you have to eat and sleep well, do exercises, as well as enjoy what life has to offer...click here to continue reading

Hepatitis C in Men

Hepatitis is generally known as a disease of the liver that causes its inflammation. Hepatitis C is a type of hepatitis that could be transmitted by a blood to blood contact. Because of its means of transmission, women are more commonly associated with this disease because of pregnancy, but men could also be victims of this disease.

Men could acquire hepatitis c through blood transfusion, tattoing or injections, sexual intercourse, or any exposure to the blood of a hepatitis c carrier.

Hepatitis c is such a dangerous disease to have because because a lot of people who have this disease do not feel any symptoms at all. They may, however, have extrahepatic symptoms, meaning that they occur outside of the liver, so it could show its symptoms in different parts of the body such as the skin which often misleads people into believing that they have a different disease. It usually takes a while to detect hepatits c. There are some mild symptoms of this disease that could be experienced such as nausea, discomfort in the abdomen and tiredness...click here to continue reading

What's Good For The Heart May Be Good For The Prostate

Men who eat a diet low in fat and red meat but high in vegetables and lean protein and who drink alcohol in moderation may not just be doing their hearts a favor. A new study shows that such a heart healthy diet may also be good for the prostate.

Specifically, such a diet significantly decreases the risk of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The bothersome condition is associated with frequent and painful urination that affects about half of all men by the time they reach 50 and nearly all men by age 70. These findings by lead author Alan Kristal, Dr.P.H., and colleagues are published online in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The researchers found that a high-fat diet increased the risk of benign enlargement of the prostate by 31 percent, and that daily consumption of red meat increased the risk by 38 percent. The study also found that eating four or more servings of vegetables daily was associated with a 32 percent reduction in risk, consuming high amounts of lean protein (about 20 percent of daily calorie intake) was associated with a 15 percent risk reduction, and that regular, moderate alcohol consumption (no more than two drinks a day) was associated with a 38 percent decline in BPH risk.

"It is known that obesity increases the risk of BPH. The dietary pattern that is associated with obesity among men in the United States is high fat consumption. The results of this study clearly show a link between a high-fat diet and increased risk of BPH," said Kristal, member and associate head of the Cancer Prevention Program in the Public Health Sciences Division at the Hutchinson Center.

Prostate enlargement puts pressure on the urethra, which makes it difficult to empty the bladder completely, which in turn results in the frequent urge to urinate. BPH is also associated with constant contraction of the prostate gland's smooth-muscle tissue, which also puts pressure on the urethra...click here to continue reading

Hormone therapy health risk for men

Hormone supplements, already shown to be harmful to women, may pose an "urgent" health risk to men, some researchers are warning.

Doctors who treated two men who developed unusually aggressive and fatal prostate cancer within months of taking the same over-the-counter supplement for stronger muscles and "enhanced sexual performance" say testosterone supplements may promote the growth of prostate cancer and stop anti-cancer drugs from working.

"Given that testosterone supplements are in high demand, there is significant concern that HHDS (herbal/hormonal dietary supplements) other than the one evaluated in the current study may pose an urgent human health risk," University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center researchers report in today's issue of the journal, Clinical Cancer Research.

For legal reasons the researchers won't name the supplement, which was removed from the market, and say they have no direct proof that the product caused the highly suspicious prostate cancers.

But a leading Canadian urologist warns that men who take nutritional supplements advertised as having male hormones are "really playing with fire."

"Many men are on androgen replacement therapy or some kind of male hormone replacement and there's always been a concern this may stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells," says Dr. Laurence Klotz, chief of the division of urology at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Science Centre.

"It's a very controversial question and the answer is still not clear."

A separate study, this one the latest to look at the risk of hormone therapy for women, found that taking an estrogen-plus-progesterone combination for as little as three years significantly increases the risk of certain breast cancers...click here to continue reading

Men Suffer More Acquired Brain Injury

In the U.S., an estimated 1.4 million people each year sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and 50,000 people die. Men are at much greater risk of TBI and it is estimated that two to three males sustain a traumatic brain injury for every female. Why is this?

TBI and Motor Vehicles

Men are more likely to engage in activities that make them more vulnerable to acquired traumatic brain injury. Fifty to 70 percent of TBIs are the result of road traffic accidents involving car crashes, motorcycles and bicycles. Motor vehicle insurers know that men are more likely to make a claim than women as a result of accidents, hence premiums are often higher for men.

TBI and War

Wars and areas of conflict such as Iraq and Afghanistan mean male soldiers are in more prominent combat situations are are therefore more vulnerable to head injury. Blast injuries and penetrating trauma caused by bullets, bombs and projectiles mean that TBI and spinal injury account for nearly 25 percent of injuries to combat troops.

TBI, Criminality and Antisocial Behavior in Men

The peak age for TBI is between 15 and 24 years. Young men are also more likely to get into fights involving weapons and firearms, often after drinking alcohol. The Centers for Disease Control report that firearm use cause about 10 percent of all TBIs and is the leading cause of death related to TBI. They account for 44 percent of TBI-related deaths. Drugs and alcohol are often experimented with when people are young. Overdoses, driving and other activities performed under the influence of alcohol or drugs all increase the likelihood of acquiring a brain injury...click here to continue reading

Drinking, Smoking Damage Men's Sperm

Children from smoking and drinking fathers are more likely to have health problems, because toxic environment damages not only men's health, but also their children’s health. Exposure to toxins damages men's sperm and affect heirs’ health.

Matthew Anway from University of Idaho led a study in male rats. The rats were exposed to garden chemicals. These rats found to have health defects such as damaged or overgrown prostates, infertility, kidney problems. Besides their own problems, the next four generations had health defects.

The rats were exposed to high levels of toxins, but the research shows clear evidence that quality of sperm affects health of next generations. Previously conducted researches have already proven that women’s health is very important for having healthy babies, but few studies mention men’s health...click here to continue reading

Five Foot Problems Men Should Never Ignore

Men's Foot Problems

Feet are the Rodney Dangerfield of body parts; they don't get no respect.

That's especially true for men's feet. Men often resist going to the doctor when they're sick or in pain. But most foot conditions are treatable, and easier to treat, when diagnosed early.
The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) wants men to know about five foot problems they should never ignore:

Heel pain is often caused by tissue inflammation, but can also result from a broken bone, a tight Achilles tendon, a pinched nerve, or other problem. A qualified physician will know how to diagnose and treat the true cause of heel pain.

Ankle sprains always, always, always require a prompt visit to the doctor. Men who skip out on medical care are more likely to suffer repeated ankle sprains and then develop chronic ankle instability...click here to continue reading
